A self-orthogonal code is a code \(C\) satisfying \(C \subseteq C^\perp\), where \(C^\perp\) is the orthogonal of \(C\) under the Euclidean inner-product. The authors give a building up construction for self-orthogonal codes over the ring \(\mathbb{Z}_4\) using the ring \(\mathbb{Z}_4[u]/ \langle u^2+1\rangle.\) This means that self-orthogonal codes of increased length are formed from self-orthogonal codes of lesser length. They show that any self-orthogonal code with certain conditions can be obtained via this technique. Numerous new self-orthogonal codes are constructed.
