The authors discuss the problem of finding new methods for designing synthetic central pattern generators (CPGs) with identical response to their biological counterpart to be used in bioelectronic implants. Optimization-based parameter estimation is used for identifying network parameters able to produce specific temporal dynamics. The authors show that sequential parameter estimation of each single neuron is possible by reducing the network to the phase resetting curves of its neurons, thus avoiding the solution of estimating all parameters simultaneously. An application example is given for estimating parameters for emulating the phase-locked activity for ECG data. The results can be useful for designing synthetic networks to aimed at being interfaced with nervous systems. For the entire collection see [Zbl 1477.93111].
