An important role in higher Auslander-Reiten theory is played by \(n\)-cluster tilting subcategories of abelian categories and \(n\)-almost split sequences introduced by \textit{O. Iyama} [Adv. Math. 210, No 1, 22--50 (2007; Zbl 1115.16005); Adv. Math. 210, No 1, 51--82 (2007; Zbl 1115.16006)]). Let \(A\) be an Artin algebra over a fixed commutative Artin ring. Moreover, let mod\(\,A\) be the abelian category of all finitely generated left \(A\)-modules and \(\mathcal{M}\) be an \(n\)-cluster tilting subcategory of mod\(\,A\). In the paper under review, the authors show that \(\mathcal{M}\) has an additive generator if and only if the \(n\)-almost split sequences form a basis for the relations for the Grothendieck group of \(\mathcal{M}\) if and only if every effaceable functor from \(\mathcal{M}\) to the abelian category \(\mathcal{A}b\) of all abelian groups has finite length (Theorem A). As a consequence, they proved that if mod\(\,A\) has an \(n\)-cluster tilting subcategory of finite type then the \(n\)-almost split sequences form a basis for the relations for the Grothendieck group of mod\(\,A\) (Corollary A).
