Suppose \(X\) is a complex projective manifold. Consider the Abel-Jacobi map for codimension \(p\) homologically trivial cycle classes \(\mathrm{AJ}: \mathrm{CH}^p(X) \to J^{2p-1}(X)\). By restricting \(\mathrm{AJ}\) to algebraically trivial classes \(\mathrm{A}^p(X)\) and a certain subabelian variety \(J_a^{2p-1}(X)\) of the intermediate Jacobian \(J^{2p-1}(X)\), one gets the algebraic Abel-Jacobi map \(\psi^p: \mathrm{A}^p(X) \to J_a^{2p-1}(X)\). In [\textit{M. Walker}, Compos. Math. 143, No. 4, 909--944 (2007; Zbl 1187.14014)], Walker applies the theory of Lawson homology to define a new type of Abel-Jacobi map \(\psi_W^p: \mathrm{A}^p(X) \to J_W^{2p-1}(X)\) (called the \emph{Walker Abel-Jacobi map}). Specifically, the map \(\psi_W^p\) is a lift of the algebraic Abel-Jacobi map \(\psi^p\) along an isogeny \(J_W^{2p-1}(X) \to J_a^{2p-1}(X)\) (Theorem A), and hence is a finer invariant for algebraically trivial cycles. Suzuki gives an alternative construction of \(\psi_W^p\) using Bloch-Ogus theory (cf.~[\textit{F. Suzuki}, Épijournal de Géom.~Algébr., EPIGA 5, Article 20, 9 p. (2021; Zbl 1482.14008)]). In the paper under review, the authors provide a third construction of the Walker Abel-Jacobi map \(\psi_W^p\), and show that \(\psi_W^p\) descends canonically to the field of definition of \(X\) (Theorem B). The proof relies on that \(\psi_W^p\) is \emph{regular} (Page 180, also see Lemma 7.3 of the paper by Walker and Corollary 2.6 of the paper by Suzuki). Another key ingredient is a general lifting property for surjective regular homomorphisms which is proved in Theorem 1.5.
