The main result in this paper is a characterization of sequences of quasi-Fuchsian groups whose limit sets, as parametrized by Cannon-Thurston maps, move discontinuously with respect to algebraic convergence. At the same time, the authors study possible geometric limits of sequences of Kleinian surface groups. Their methods are based on techniques developed in [\textit{K. Ohshika}, Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse, Math. (6) 29, No. 4, 805--895 (2020; Zbl 1461.30102); \textit{K. Ohshika} and \textit{T. Soma}, in: In the tradition of Thurston. Geometry and topology. Cham: Springer. 291--363 (2020; Zbl 1480.57028)]. The result gives, for a particular class of groups, an answer to a question asked by W. Thurston.
