The main result of the paper is a description of the Galois cohomology set \[ \mathrm{H}^{1}(\mathbb R,G)\, :=\,\mathrm{H}^{1}(\mathrm{Gal} (\mathbb C/\mathbb R),G(\mathbb C)) \] of a real quasi-reductive algebraic group~\(G\). Following [\textit{J.-P. Labesse}, Cohomologie, stabilisation et changement de base. Avec la collaboration de Lawrence Breen et Laurent Clozel. Paris: Société Mathématique de France (1999; Zbl 1024.11034)] the kernel of a surjective homomorphism of a connected reductive group onto a torus is called a quasi-connected reductive group. The first half of the paper under review discusses certain properties of such groups including another characterization. In the second half it is shown that given a quasi-reductive group~\(G\) over the real numbers then there exists a \(\mathbb R\)-quasi-torus~\(Q\) in~\(G\), such that \(\mathrm{H}^{1}(\mathbb R,G)\) is bijective to \(\mathrm{H}^{1}(\mathbb R,Q)\) modulo an action of the Weyl group of the derived group of the connected component of~\(G\), which is also defined in this paper. As the first Galois cohomology set of a \(\mathbb R\)-quasi-torus is well understood this result amounts to a computation of~\(\mathrm{H}^{1}(\mathbb R,G)\).
