In this note the authors extend to compact symmetric spaces a result about compact Lie groups, namely a description of the group of isometries of a polar set, given in their previous paper [Differ. Geom. Appl. 73, Article ID 101682, 32 p. (2020; Zbl 1468.53048)]. They prove the following: Let \(M=G/K\) be a compact connected Riemannian symmetric space and \(o\in M\), \(K_0\) the connected component of the isotropy subgroup \(K\) of \(o\). Let \(M^+\) be a polar set of \(M\) with respect to \(o\), and \(x_0\in M^+\). Then \[M^+=\{k(x_0)\mid k\in K_0\},\ \text{ and }\ I_0(M^+)=\{k|_{M^+}\mid k\in K_0\}.\] For the proof the authors extend results from the book by \textit{S. Helgason} [Differential geometry, Lie groups, and symmetric spaces. Reprint with corrections of the 1978 original. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (2001; Zbl 0993.53002)]. These results are about compact symmetric spaces \(G/K\). In the book by Helgason, these results are established when \(G\) is semisimple. The authors prove these results without this assumption.
