The study of maximal von Neumann subalgebras with particular properties plays a key role in the theory of operator algebras, and there are many important results in this subject (see [\textit{J. Dixmier}, Ann. Math. (2) 59, 279--286 (1954; Zbl 0055.10702); \textit{J. Feldman} and \textit{C. C. Moore}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 234, 289--324 (1977; Zbl 0369.22009); \textit{A. Ioana}, in: Proceedings of the international congress of mathematicians 2018, ICM 2018, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, August 1--9, 2018. Volume III. Invited lectures. Hackensack, NJ: World Scientific; Rio de Janeiro: Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática (SBM). 1639--1672 (2018; Zbl 1461.46058)]). The Haagerup property was first defined for groups by \textit{U. Haagerup} [Invent. Math. 50, 279--293 (1979; Zbl 0408.46046)], as a weakened version of amenability. This concept was generalized to one in the context of von Neumann algebras by [\textit{M. Choda}, Proc. Japan Acad., Ser. A 59, 174--177 (1983; Zbl 0523.46038)] for distinguishing particular group von Neumann algebras. In this paper, the authors focus on maximal subgroups and maximal von Neumann subalgebras which have the Haagerup property. In Section 2, the authors characterize maximal Haagerup subgroups inside \(\mathbb Z\rtimes SL_2(\mathbb Z)\). In Section 3, the authors give many examples of maximal Haagerup subalgebras, and answer in the positive two questions of \textit{L. M. Ge} [Acta Math. Sin., Engl. Ser. 19, No. 3, 619--624 (2003; Zbl 1043.46045)] regarding maximal von Neumann algebras. In Section 4, some remarks and examples concerning maximal non-(T) subgroups and subalgebras are shown.
