The authors discuss the numerical simulation of the electrical activity in the cardiac tissue. The mathematical model consists of a system of parabolic partial differential equations coupled with a system of ordinary differential equations. For the numerical solution of this problem, a finite element discretization in space and a fully implicit discretization in time are used. This discretization leads to a system of nonlinear algebraic equations in each time step. These systems of equations are solved by means of the Newton method. For solving the linear systems of equations in each Newton step, a Krylov iterative solver with preconditioners is applied. Hereby, the balancing domain decomposition with constraints and dual-primal finite element tearing and interconnecting preconditioners are used. Extensive numerical studies on parallel computers are presented. They show the scalability and robustness of the presented solution strategies.
