From the Introduction: Interaction of free flow and porous medium flow is ubiquitous in nature, science and engineering. Common examples include groundwater-surface water flow system, oil and water filtering system, and blood filtration. The coupled Stokes-Darcy system is an important model in describing interacting free flow and porous media flow in the low Reynolds number regime, and it is consistent with physical energy laws. The Stokes-Darcy model has been widely used in numerical analysis and simulations for coupled freeporous media flows. While the well-posedness of the Stokes-Darcy system with either the Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface boundary condition or the original Beavers-Joseph interface condition was settled long time ago, the elliptic regularity of the solutions to the system, although expected, cannot be found in existing literature so far. On the other hand, the regularity of the solutions is customary assumed in numerical analysis of various numerical algorithms for the Stokes-Darcy system. Therefore, there is a genuine need to address the regularity issue of the Stokes-Darcy system. The main focus of this paper is to fill the gap by addressing the regularity issue of the time-independent Stokes-Darcy system with Beavers-Joseph-Saffman-Jones interface boundary condition by proper extension of earlier results on the regularity of the Stokes system.
