The authors extend some classical results of \textit{C. Bankwitz} [Math. Ann. 103, 145--161 (1930; JFM 56.1133.01)], \textit{R. H. Crowell} [Ann. Math. (2) 69, 258--275 (1959; Zbl 0111.35803)] and \textit{K. Murasugi} [J. Math. Soc. Japan 10, 94--105 (1958; Zbl 0084.19301) and ibid. 10, 235--248 (1958; Zbl 0106.16701)] to the setting of virtual links -- e.g., an alternating virtual link is split if and only if it is visibly split, and the Alexander polynomial of any almost classical alternating virtual link is alternating. They also discuss the Tait conjectures for virtual and welded links and note that Tait's second conjecture is not true for alternating welded links.
