In this paper the author studies the family \(\mathcal{B}\) consisting of all multiplicative functions \(f:\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{C}\) with bounded partial sums. He shows that if \(f\in\mathcal{B}\) and \(\sum_{p}|1-f(p)|/p<\infty\) then \(\sum_{k\geq 0}f(q^k)/q^k=0\) for some prime \(q\), and if further \(f\) be periodic with period \(m\), for which \(f(m)\neq 0\), then the above mentioned \(q\) satisfies three conditions (i) \(q|m\), (ii) for each \(p^\alpha\|m\) one has \(f(p^k)=f(p^\alpha)\) for all \(k\geq\alpha\), (iii) for each prime \(p\) with \(\gcd(p,m)=1\) one has \(f(p^k)=1\) for all \(k\geq 1\). The author also proves that if the multiplicative functions \(f_1\) and \(f_2\) satisfy conditions (i)-(iii) then \[ \sum_{n\leq x}(f_1\ast f_2)(n)=\Omega(\exp(d\log x/\log\log x)) \] for some \(d>0\), where \(\Omega\) is the standard notation in asymptotic theory. Finally, he shows that if further \(f_1\) and \(f_2\) be periodic with periods \(m_1\) and \(m_2\), respectively, then for all \(x>m_1m_2\) one has \[ \sum_{n\leq x}(f_1\ast f_2)(n)=\sum_{n|m_1m_2}(f\ast\mu\ast\mu)(n)\,\Delta\left(\frac{x}{n}\right), \] where \(\Delta\) refers to the error term in the classical Dirichlet divisor problem.
