This is a review article discussing previous work by the authors on the effects of heterogeneity on the dynamics of models of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). The SCN is modelled as a network of oscillators, and three types of oscillators are considered: a Goodwin oscillator, a Poincaré oscillator, and a Kuramoto phase oscillator. There are many ways in which heterogeneity can be included, both intrinsic to the oscillators, and related to the network structure. Measures of interest include the range of forcing frequencies to which the network can lock, and the amplitude of its resulting oscillations. The authors conclude that heterogeneity in the SCN may be important for keeping a fine balance between flexibility and stability of the network's rhythm.
