The authors consider the development of an abstract framework that allows them to analyze algebraically stabilized discretizations in a unified way. This work is motivated by numerical solution of the scalar steady-state convection-diffusion-reaction problems. A serious difficulty for computing numerical approximations of solutions of convection-diffusion-reaction equations is that many proposed discretizations do not satisfy the discrete counterpart of the maximum principles, so-called discrete maximum principles (DMPs), and thus they are not physically consistent in this respect. One of the exceptions are algebraically stabilized finite element schemes, e.g., algebraic flux correction (AFC) schemes, where DMPs have been proved rigorously. The authors study methods of this type where the stabilization is performed on the basis of the algebraic system of equations obtained with the Galerkin finite element method. Then, so-called limiters are computed, which maintain the conservation property and restrict the stabilized discretization mainly to a vicinity of layers to ensure the satisfaction of DMPs without compromising the accuracy. The use of this new limiter improves a standard one in such a way that local and global discrete maximum principles are satisfied on arbitrary simplicial meshes.
