The focus of this paper is on analyzing the behavior of a two-strain SIS epidemic model on complex networks, with a general incidence rate, which can be viewed as an extended version of models with nonlinear incidence rates. The main motivation of the paper is that the interplay between microorganisms is significantly influenced by genetic heterogeneity, with the competitive exclusion principle serving as the primary governing principle for disease-causing agents' competition. The authors calculate the basic reproduction numbers and invasion reproduction numbers for both strains and show that these are threshold parameters in determining the competitive exclusion and coexistence of the two strains. The paper establishes that the competitive exclusion principle holds globally, and there is a unique and global coexistence endemic equilibrium. Numerical simulations are presented to illustrate the evolution of the two strains considering bilinear incidence rate, saturation incidence rate and nonlinear connectivity.
