The concept of stability of an Einstein metric was initiated by N. Koiso in 1980. There is also extensive discussion in the book by \textit{A. L. Besse} [Einstein manifolds. Berlin etc.: Springer-Verlag (1987; Zbl 0613.53001)]. The Einstein metrics are considered as critical points of the scalar curvature functional among Riemannian metrics of fixed volume. In the present paper the authors study the stability of standard homogeneous Einstein metrics. These are invariant metrics on a homogeneous space \(G/K\) determined by the Killing form of the Lie algebra of \(G\). Beyond isotropy irreducible spaces, the standard homogeneous Einstein metrics have been classified by \textit{M. Y. Wang} and \textit{W. Ziller} [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 18, 563--633 (1985; Zbl 0598.53049)]. The present study focuses on the stability of these metrics and presents an interesting analysis on whether these metrics are stable, semistable, or local maxima of the scaral curvature functional. The work continues previous works of second author and C. Will.
