The concept of exact Borel subalgebra of a quasi-hereditary algebra, introduced by \textit{S. König} [Math. Z. 220, No. 3, 399--426 (1995; Zbl 0841.16013)], is the quasi-hereditary analogue of the universal enveloping algebra of a Borel subalgebra of a semisimple complex Lie algebra. \textit{S. Koenig} et al. [Adv. Math. 262, 546--592 (2014; Zbl 1330.16008)] proved that every quasi-hereditary algebra over an algebraically closed field is Morita equivalent to a quasi-hereditary algebra having an exact Borel subalgebra. Pre-standardly stratified algebras, in the sense of \textit{O. Mendoza} et al. [Q. J. Math. 60, No. 1, 75--103 (2009; Zbl 1209.18013)], are a natural generalisation of quasi-hereditary algebras to consider from a ring theoretical point of view. Moreover, pre-standardly stratified algebras generalise standardly stratified algebras, in the sense of \textit{I. Ágoston} et al. [C. R. Math. Acad. Sci., Soc. R. Can. 20, No. 1, 22--28 (1998; Zbl 0914.16010)], by extending the partially ordered set parametrising the standard modules to a pre-ordered set. In the paper under review, the authors show that every pre-standardly stratified algebra over an algebraically closed field is Morita equivalent to a pre-standardly stratified algebra having an exact Borel subalgebra. Here, the definition of exact Borel subalgebra is slightly modified compared with the classical one to accommodate the fact that in this setup the standard modules are parametrised by a pre-ordered set. In the quasi-hereditary case, a crucial tool in Koenig, Külshammer and Ovsienko's approach is the equivalence between the exact category of modules having a finite filtration by standard modules \(\mathcal{F}(\Delta)\) and the exact category of modules over a certain directed bocs associated to the quasi-hereditary algebra. Over pre-standardly stratified algebras, the authors show that a direct bocs is no longer in this picture, but instead a special triangular weak differential tensor algebra. Concerning terminology, we remind the reader that pre-standardly stratified algebras are precisely the standardly stratified algebras, in the sense of \textit{E. Cline} et al. [Stratifying endomorphism algebras. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (1996; Zbl 0888.16006)].
