This work is about the Poisson approximations of recurrences to small subsets in the phase spaces for chaotic dynamical systems. The authors develop a novel approach to obtain interesting results and to improve the existing ones. In particular, they prove some asymptotic functional Poisson laws in the total variation norm and estimate the corresponding convergence rates for a large class of hyperbolic dynamical systems. These exciting results are further illustrated in the case of intermittent solenoids, Axiom A attractors, Hénon attractors and some billiards.
