Let \(f\) be a holomorphic family of irreducible holomorphic symplectic (or ihs for short) manifolds over \(\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{C})\). The authors prove that \(f\) has unobstructed deformations if its period map is an embedding. They apply their theorem to the case of twistor spaces of ihs manifolds. They also prove that a family of ihs manifolds defined over a subspace extends to a universal family over an open neighborhood of the period domain. They discuss the meaning and use of their main result, not just as an abstract unobstructness result as a deformation theoretic statement, but as the primary step towards a potential moduli theory for families of ihs manifolds over \(\mathbb {P}^1(C)\). They suggest that this could give explicit description of the moduli space, contrary to the abstract functorial approach, for which see the important papers by \textit{Z. Ran} [J. Differ. Geom. 34, No. 1, 37--47 (1991; Zbl 0755.32017) and \textit{J. J. Kohn} [Lect. Notes Pure Appl. Math. 132, 229--238 (1991; Zbl 0743.32010)].
