Let \(\mathbf{G}\) denote a reductive algebraic group defined over a number field \(\mathbb{K}\). In the paper under the review, the authors provide a reduction principle for unipotent periods of the automorphic forms on \(\mathbf{G}\). The authors work in a generality of pair \((G, \Gamma)\), where \(G\) is a finite central extension of the adele group \(\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{A})\), and \(\Gamma\) is a discrete subgroup of \(G\) on which the covering map restricts to an isomorphism with \(\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{K})\), and consider a special class of unipotent periods associated to an ordered pair belonging to \(\mathfrak{g} \times \mathfrak{g}^{\ast}\), where \(\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{g}(\mathbb{K})\) is the Lie algebra of \(\mathbf{G}(\mathbb{K})\). This class includes the unipotent periods studied in the theory of automorphic forms. The authors provide a description of a quasi-order on Fourier coefficients and, as a main result of the paper, a reduction algorithm which allows one to express any Fourier coefficient in terms of others, higher with respect to the introduced quasi-order. In particular, any Fourier coefficient can be expressed in terms of the maximal elements for the quasi-order, which correspond to taking the constant term along the unipotent radical of a parabolic subgroup and then taking a Fourier coefficient with respect to \(\mathbb{K}\)-distinguished nilpotent orbit in the Levi quotient. The main tool is a generalization of the deformation technique, which builds on the root-exchange method.
