      Let \(0<\theta<\frac{1}{2}\), \(a<b\) and \(c<d\) be real numbers. In the paper under review, the author improves the Selberg central limit theorem for the Riemann zeta function \(\zeta(s)\) on \(\sigma_T=\frac{1}{2}+(\log T)^{- \theta}\) and \(t\in [T, 2T]\) by showing that there exist constants \(\varepsilon,\) \(\eta>0\) and a sequence \(\lbrace d_{k, l}\rbrace_{k,l\geq 0}\) of real numbers such that as \(T\to \infty\) \begin{align*} \frac{1}{T} \mbox{meas} \left\lbrace t\in [T, 2T]: \frac{\log \zeta(\sigma_T +it)} {\sqrt{\pi \psi_T}} \in [a,b]\times[c,d]\right\rbrace =\sum_{k+l\leq \varepsilon \psi_T}\\ \frac{d_{k,l}}{\sqrt{\psi_T}^{k+l}}\int _c^d\int_a^b e^{-\pi(x^2+y^2)}H_k(\sqrt{\pi}x)H_l(\sqrt{\pi}y) dxdy +O\left(\frac{1}{\left(\log T\right)^\eta}\right), \end{align*} where \(H_n(x)\) is the \(n\)-th Hermite polynomial defined by \[ H_n(x)=(-1)^n e^{x^2}\frac{d^n}{dx^n}(e^{-x^2}). \]
