Let \(X\subset \mathbb {P}^{n+1}\) be a smooth degree \(d\) hypersurface over the finite field \(\mathbb {F}_q\). \textit{M. Homma} and \textit{S. J. Kim} [Finite Fields Appl. 48, 395--419 (2017; Zbl 1398.14031)] proved an upper bound for \(\#X(\mathbb {F}_q)\) and made a stronger conjecture for the maximum of all \(\#X(\mathbb {F}_q)\) involving the Thas function. In the paper under review the author proves the conjecture for \(n=3\) and also for all odd \(n\ge 5\) if \(d\le q\).
