Expanding on the results in [\textit{L. Ambrosio} et al., J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS) 3, No. 1, 39--92 (2001; Zbl 0981.49024)], the authors provide a notion of connected (or simply connected) perimeter for planar sets, as a suitable \(L^1\)-relaxation of measure-theoretically connected (or simply connected) sets. In particular, they provide representation formulas for essentially bounded planar sets of finite perimeter such that their topological boundary differs from the reduced one by a \(\mathcal H^1\)-negligible set. The obtained formulas for the two considered relaxations are in terms of the sum of the classical perimeter of the given set and twice the \(\mathcal H^1\) measure of suitable Steiner trees (cf. [\textit{E. N. Gilbert} and \textit{H. O. Pollak}, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 16, 1--29 (1968; Zbl 0159.22001)]) for the closure of the points of density 1 (or both those of density one and those of density 0). The paper is also complemented by an application to some related nonlocal problem.
