The controllability properties of bilinear control systems are studied. First, the properties of the control sets for homogeneous bilinear systems are discussed. It is shown that every control set on the unit sphere with nonempty interior induces a control set on \(R^n \setminus \{0\}\) provided that exponential growth and decay can be achieved. Moreover, for bilinear control systems satisfying the accessibility rank condition on projective space, the control sets on the unit sphere and on \(R^n \setminus \{0\}\) are characterized. Next, the control sets for general bilinear control systems and their relation to equilibria are analyzed. It is proved that any path-wise connected set of equilibria is contained in a control set. Additional assumptions on spectral properties of the matrices, generating the dynamics of the system, allow us to get more detailed information. Two-dimensional illustrative examples are also presented.
