The author studies the sum of the Betti numbers of the loop space \(\Omega_M\) of a compact manifold \(M\). He supposes that \(M\) bears a Riemannian metric which imposes a complex structure on its tangent bundle, or, more precisely, on a tube of some radius \(R\) about the zero section in the tangent bundle, i.e., a Grauert tube. He supposes this complex structure is \textit{canonical} in a sense he makes precise. He proves that there is a constant \(C>0\) so that, for any integer \(k\) and field \(\mathbb{F}\), \[ \sum_{i=0}^{k-1} \dim H_i(\Omega_M,\mathbb{F}) \le \frac{\operatorname{Vol} \mathbb{S}^{n-1}} {\operatorname{Vol} M} \int_0^{Ck} \left( \frac{\sinh(\pi\sigma/2R)}{\pi/2R} \right)^{n-1} d\sigma. \] The method involves the study of holomorphic strips over geodesics, a Fatou-type lemma due to Lempert and Szöke, and analytic continuation to extend an estimate on the Betti number sum due to Gromov.
