In this paper, the authors consider the polynomial stability for an abstract system of the type \[ u_{tt} + Lu + Bu_t = 0, \] where \(L\) is a self-adjoint operator on a Hilbert space and operator \(B\) represents the local damping. In this paper, they impose a concentration assumption on the eigenvalues of \(L\) and a non-degeneration assumption on the damping operator \(B\). By establishing a rather precise estimate on the resolvent of the operator \(A\), they prove that the semigroup associated with the abstract system is polynomially stable with a certain decay rate. After obtaining the polynomial decay rate of the abstract system, the authors apply their result to PDE models with local damping.
