Let \(T\) be a bounded linear operator on a Banach space \(X\). The \textit{Kreiss constant} of \(T\) with respect to the domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb C\) bounded by a Jordan curve \(\Gamma\) is \[ {\mathcal K}_T(\Omega):= \sup_{z\notin\overline{\Omega}}\frac{|\phi(z)|-1}{|\phi'(z)|}\|(zI-T)^{-1}\|. \] Here \(\phi\) is the (unique) conformal map of the exterior of \(\Omega\) onto \(\{z: |z|>1\}\) for which \(\phi(\infty)=\infty\) and \(\phi'(\infty)>0\). The main result of the paper states that, if \(\Gamma\) is twice continuously differentiable then there is a constant \(C_\Omega\), independent of \(T\) such that for any rational function \(f\) bounded on \(\Omega\) \[ \|f(T))\|\leq C_\Omega{\mathcal K}_T(\Omega)(\deg(f)+1)\sup_{z\in\Omega}|f(z)|. \] The degree of a rational function \(f=p/q\) is understood as \(\deg p+\deg q\) with the polynomials \(p,q\) being relatively prime.
