In this paper the author proves a geometric analogue of the Vietoris-Begle theorem. It states that if \(X\) is a connected space having the homotopy type of a countable CW complex, \(Y\) is an ANR, and \(f: X\to Y\) is a compressive surjection, then \(f\) is a homotopy equivalence. As an application, it is shown that if \(C\) is a convex subset of a topological vector lattice \(L\) and \(D = u(C)\) is metrizable, then \(D\) is an ANR and \(u|C: C\to D\) is a homotopy equivalence, and hence \(D\) is an AR. Here \(u: L \to L_{+} = \{x\in L:\,x\geq 0\}\) is the function defined by \(u(x) = x\vee 0\).
