Recall that a function \(f:(X,d)\to (Y,\rho)\) between two metric spaces is said to be \textit{Cauchy-regular} (also known as Cauchy-continuous) if it maps Cauchy sequences in \(X\) to Cauchy sequences in \(Y\). In order to characterize the functions between metric spaces preserving totally bounded sets, \textit{G. Beer} and \textit{S. Levi} [Topology Appl. 156, No. 7, 1271--1288 (2009; Zbl 1167.54008)] considered functions that map Cauchy sequences in \(X\) to sequences having a Cauchy subsequence in \(Y\). These functions, called \textit{Cauchy-subregular}, are precisely the main objective of this paper. Furthermore, during the last years, many authors have considered different classes of functions between metric spaces preserving other types of sequences (subcontinuous functions, cofinally Cauchy regular functions, etc.), as well as functions having some kind of Lipschitz properties (Cauchy-Lipschitz functions, locally Lipschitz functions, etc.). The paper under review contains, as the title says, a careful study comparing these Cauchy-subregular functions with the other classes of functions mentioned above. Interesting results are obtained and many examples are presented in order to clarify all these notions.
