This paper studies the sharp inferface limit for the Allen-Cahn equation with an anisotropic, spatially periodic mobility coefficient and proves that the large-scale behavior of interfaces is determined by mean curvature flow with an effective mobility. Unlike the work of Barles and Souganidis, the assumptions here are more general, in which case the corresponding cell problem, especially in rational directions, is ill-posed. The author first introduces mesoscopic sub- and supersolutions to identify the limit in irrational directions and then shows that the knowledge in these directions is enough to determine the behavior globally.
