The main theorems obtained in this paper are as follows. (a) Suppose that for a \(\sigma\)-unital \(C^*\)-algebra \(B\) (non-unital), every hereditary \(C^*\)-subalgebra \(C\) of the multiplier algebra \(M (M_n(B))\), for any positive integer \(n\), strictly containing the matrix algebra \(M_n(B)\) over \(B\) has trivial \(K_1\)-theory. Then the corona algebra \(M(B)/B\) has real rank zero. (b) Assume next that a \(C^*\)-algebra \(B\) is a simple non-unital separable \(C^*\)-algebra with strict comparison of positive elements by traces, projection injectivity and surjectivity, and quasi-continuous scale. Then the corona algebra \(M(B)/B\) has real rank zero.
