This paper provides an application of the authors' prior work [J. Funct. Anal. 275, No. 11, 2978--3064 (2018; Zbl 1440.11087)]. Let \(S_k\) be the set of holomorphic cusp forms of weight \(k\) and level 1, let \(H_k\) be an orthonormal basis of \(S_k\) consisting of Hecke eigenforms. For an Hecke-Maass form \(\phi\), consider its weighted first moment \[ A_{k,n}(\phi)=\sum_{f\in H_k}\mu_f(\phi)\lambda_f(n), \] where \(\lambda_f(n)\) is the \(n\)-th (normalized) Hecke eigenvalue of \(f\) and \(\mu_f\) is a measure defined by \(f\) so that \(\mu_f(\phi)\) is the triple product integral associated to \(\phi\otimes f\otimes\bar f\). Translating the trace formula in their prior work to the current setting (in classical modular form language), the authors first establish an explicit formula for \(A_{k,n}(\phi)\). Next, they are able to derive an asymptotic formula for \(A_{k,n}(\phi)\) when \(k\mapsto\infty\). The asymptotic formula for the average \(\frac 1K\sum_{k\in [K,2K), k\text{ even}}(-1)^{k/2}A_{k,n}(\phi)\) as \(K\mapsto\infty\) is particularly simple. From that asymptotic formula, the authors prove a non-vanishing result for central value of \(L(s,\phi\times Ad\ f)\). More precisely, they derive an explicit lower bound for \[ N_{\phi,n}(K)=\# \{f\in \cup_{K\leq k<2K} H_k\ \vert\ \lambda_f(n)\not=0,\ L(\frac12,\phi\times \mathrm{Ad}\ f)\not=0\} \] when \(K\) is large.
