The authors investigate the displacement in the optimal matching problem in dimensions two and three, which is esentially given by the solution of the linearized (Poisson) equation. They show that at all mesoscopic scales, this displacement is close to a curl-free Gaussian free field, in some suitable negative Sobolev spaces.
