This is a study of maximal ideals in simplified and full Colombeau algebras of generalized functions. Compared to previous work of the authors, new points of view that enter the analysis are the incorporation of \textit{E. E. Rosinger}'s work on general embeddings of distributions into algebras of generalized functions using ``off diagonal'' conditions [Generalized solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations. Amsterdam etc.: North-Holland (1987; Zbl 0635.46033)]. Also, considering Colombeau generalized functions as set-theoretical functions on generalized points and applying the resulting calculus developed in [\textit{J. Aragona} et al., Monatsh. Math. 144, No.~1, 13--29 (2005; Zbl 1081.46029)] allows the authors to make use of the theory of rings of continuous functions due to \textit{L. Gillman} and \textit{M. Jerison} [Rings of continuous functions. Reprint of the 1960 original published by Van Nostrand Company. Mineola, NY: Dover Publications (2017; Zbl 1380.46022)]. A further new tool is what the authors call \textit{Aragona algebras}. Besides an in-depth study of ideals, main results obtained here are a general embedding theorem of the space of distributions into such Aragona algebras and characterizations of the Boolean algebra of the Colombeau algebra on an open set.
