The boundedness of the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator is studied in variable exponent Stummel spaces. The classical Stummel spaces $\mathfrak{S}^{p,\lambda} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ are defined by the norm \[ \|f\|_{\mathfrak{S}^{p,\lambda}(\mathbb{R}^n)}:=\sup_{x\in \mathbb{R}^n} \left(\int_{\mathbb{R}^n} \frac{|f(y)|^p}{|x-y|^p} \ dy \right), \ 1\leq p <\infty, \ 0<\lambda<n. \] Therefore the variable exponent version of these spaces is $\mathfrak{S}^{p(\cdot),\varphi(\cdot, \cdot)}$, consisting of the space of all measurable functions $f$ equipped with the norm \[ \|f\|_{\mathfrak{S}^{p(\cdot),\varphi(\cdot, \cdot)}}:=\sup_{x\in \mathbb{R}^n} \left\|\frac{f}{\varphi(x, |x-\cdot|)} \right\|_{p(\cdot)}, \] where $p$ is a variable exponent function belonging to $\mathcal{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$, which is the class of bounded and measurable functions with values in $[1,\infty)$, endowed with the norm \[ \|f\|_{p(\cdot)}:= \inf\left\{\eta>0: \ \int_{\mathbb{R}^n} \left|\frac{f(x)}{\eta} \right|^{p(x)} \, dx \leq 1 \right\}, \] and $\varphi$ is a function satisfying \[ \inf_{x\in \mathbb{R}^n} \varphi(x,t) >0, \text{ for every }t>0. \] This kind of spaces is closely related with global Morrey spaces. In fact, also included in the paper is the study of two-sided embeddings beetween Stummel and Morrey spaces such as \[ \mathfrak{S}^{p(\cdot),\varphi(\cdot, \cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n) \hookrightarrow L^{p(\cdot),\varphi(\cdot, \cdot)}(\mathbb{R}^n) \hookrightarrow \mathfrak{S}^{p(\cdot),\frac{\varphi(\cdot, \cdot)}{w(\cdot,\cdot)}}(\mathbb{R}^n), \] for suitable $\varphi$ and $w$ functions verifying suitable monotonicity conditions. As the authors remark in the paper, the boundedness of the maximal operator in Stummel spaces has never been studied in the literature, even in the constant exponent case. This goal requires to include in the paper quantitative estimates related to weighted norm inequalities for the maximal operator which provide uniform bounds for a family of weights in the Muckenhoupt class. The work also includes the study of boundedness of the maximal operator in vanishing exponent Stummel spaces.
