A rational map defined on the complex plane is the quotient of two polynomials. For the quadratic rational map, the Julia set is either connected or a Cantor set. This fact is called dichotomy. The authors establish dichotomy for the cubic rational map for which the critical points should escape to an attracting fixed point. They also provide examples to illustrate that the dichotomy might not hold for rational maps with degree bigger than three.
