A ring \(R\) is \textit{filial} if for every chain of subrings \(A_0\subset A_1\subset \dots \subset A_i \subset\dots\subset R\) in which each \(A_i\) is an ideal in \(A_{i+1}\), each \(A_i\) is an ideal in \(R\). In this paper, the authors characterize the reduced finite rank torsion-free abelian groups \(G\) with the property that every ring with additive group \(G\) is filial. Of course, every nil ring is filial, so the interest lies in characterising groups which support non-nil filial rings. The main result is that \(G\) is a group which supports a non-nil ring and on which every non-nil associative ring is filial, then \(G\) is a homogeneous Murley group of idempotent type.
