A finite family \(\{t_1, t_2,\dots, t_n\}\) of positive operators on a complex Hilbert space \(\mathcal H \) is called a positive operator valued measure (shortly, POVM) if \(\sum_{k=1}^nt_k=I\), the identity on \(\mathcal H\). If all the \(t_k'\)s are projections, then it is called a projection valued measure (shortly, PVM). The author considers how a POVM is approximated by a PVM in a von Neumann algebra on \(\mathcal H\). Let \(\mathcal M\) be a von Neumann algebra on \(\mathcal H\) with a normal state \(\varphi\). If \(\{a_k:k=1,2,\dots,n\}\subseteq \mathcal M\) is a POVM such that \(\varphi(\sum_{k=1}^na_k^2)>1-\varepsilon\), then there is a PVM \(\{p_k:k=1,2,\dots, n\}\subseteq\mathcal M\) such that \(\varphi(\sum_{k=1}^n|a_k-p_k|^2)<9\varepsilon\).
