Consider a rectangular system of \(r\) homogeneous polynomials in \(m+1\) variables \(t_0,\ldots,t_m\), with common degree \(d\). Such a system has the Kostlan-Shub-Smale distribution if each coefficient of \(\prod_{k=0}^mt_k^{j_k}\) in each of the \(r\) polynomials is an independent normal random variable with zero mean and variance \[ \frac{d!}{j_0!\cdots j_m!}, \] where \(j_0+\cdots+j_m=d\). In the case \(r<m\), the authors establish a central limit theorem for the standardized volume of the zero level set as the degree \(d\to\infty\). Their proof exploits Kac-Rice formulas and a fourth moment theorem. They also give a new proof of the limiting variance in this central limit theorem.
