The basic concepts of the finite element method (FEM) in the static and dynamic analysis of beam, plate, shell and solid structures are introduced. The theory of FEM is presented ``as simply as possible'' and illustrated with many examples. The successful application of finite element software requires good knowledge of its fundamentals and a deep understanding of many models. The content of the book starts with mathematical and mechanical basics, then moves to FEM for trusses and beams, and continues with shell and solid finite element models. The aim of this book is to provide the basic theoretical knowledge, which is required for the professional application of complex FEM software in practice. The engineer must have a full enough understanding of the calculation processes of FEM taking place in the computer. The book gives the readers the knowledge required when applying powerful FEM software tools in static or dynamic analysis. Dynamic analysis of structures presented in the book contains basic concepts of dynamics, models of free and forced vibrations and earthquake excitation. The book is based on the lectures for students of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, and is intended for students as well as for structural engineers. The book has its own homepage: \url{www.Finite-Elemente-in-der-Baustatik.de}. Readers can find information about the book there.
