The author finds various applications of metrics on the universal Teichmüller space. Let \(c_{\tilde{\mathbf T}}(\cdot,\cdot),d_{\tilde{\mathbf T}}(\cdot,\cdot),\tau_{\tilde{\mathbf T}}(\cdot,\cdot)\) denote the Carathéodory, Kobayashi and Teichmüller metrics, respectively, on any Teichmüller space \(\tilde{\mathbf T}\). It is known that \(c_{\tilde{\mathbf T}}(\cdot,\cdot)\leq d_{\tilde{\mathbf T}}(\cdot,\cdot)\leq\tau_{\tilde{\mathbf T}}(\cdot,\cdot).\) The fundamental Royden-Gardiner theorem states that \(d_{\tilde{\mathbf T}}=\tau_{\tilde{\mathbf T}}.\) The author provides a new proof of the following basic theorem. Theorem 1. The Carathéodory metric on the universal Teichmüller space \(\mathbf T\) coincides with its Kobayashi metric; hence all non-expanding invariant metrics on \(\mathbf T\) are equal its Teichmüller metric, and \[c_{\mathbf T}(\varphi,\psi)=d_{\mathbf T}(\varphi,\psi)=\tau_{\mathbf T}(\varphi,\psi)=\inf\{d_{\mathbb D}(h^{-1}(\varphi),h^{-1}(\psi)):h\in\text{Hol}(\mathbb D,\mathbf T)\},\] where \(d_{\mathbb D}\) is the hyperbolic metric on the unit disk \(\mathbb D=\{z\in\mathbb C:|z|<1\}\) of Gaussian curvature -4.
