Let \(Y\) be a subspace of a Banach space \(X\). If every functional in the dual \(Y^*\) has a unique norm-preserving extension to \(X\), then \(Y\) is said to have property (U) in \(X\). If this only holds for functionals attaining their norm on \(Y\), then \(Y\) has propery (wU) in \(X\). This is also known as weak Hahn-Banach smoothness. A related notion is that of \(Y\) being a HB-subspace of \(X\) (or \(Y\) having property (HB) in \(X\)). Instead of a functional having unique extension one can consider when the set of norm-preserving extensions of \(y^* \in Y^*\) from \(Y\) to \(X\) have affine span of dimension less than some constant for all \(y^* \in Y^*\) of norm one. If this happens, \(Y\) has propery (k-U) in \(X\). These and relationed geometric notions of Banach spaces are studied in this paper. Stability properties resulting from the properties are studied in tensor product spaces, spaces of Bochner integrable functions, and higher duals. Various examples are also given. For example it is shown that \(Y\) has property (HB) in \(c_0\) if and only if \(Y\) is an M-summand in \(c_0\). Another result is that if \(F\) is a finite dimensional subspace of \(c_0\), then \(F\) has property (k-U) in \(c_0\) for some natural number \(k\).
