The paper is a tribute to the work of Conway on random tilings, highlighting the ideas that appeared in [\textit{J. H. Conway} and \textit{J. C. Lagarias}, J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 53, No. 2, 183-208 (1990; Zbl 0741.05019)] (combinatorial group theory applied to the study of tiling problems), in [\textit{W. P. Thurston}, Am. Math. Mon. 97, No. 8, 757--773 (1990; Zbl 0714.52007)] (height functions), in [\textit{H. Cohn}, \textit{N. Elkies}, and the author, Duke Math. J. 85, No. 1, 117--166 (1996; Zbl 0866.60018)] and in several other papers written by the author in collaboration with other authors (pictorial-combinatorial-probabilistic-dynamical ideas), and emphasizing the influence these interconnected ideas had on the author's mathematical career.
