This easily readable article describes the graduate development of both mathematical research and mathematical education in South Africa, from the 17th century onwards. Many contributors to mathematics are listed, among them the famous South African mathematician Francis Guthrie (1831--1899), who was not only the first to formulate the four-color problem, but was an early advocate for the education of women. The many interrelationships between local and European efforts and advances are described in a broader context of general historical developments in South Africa. All of this makes the article appealing not only to mathematicians interested in history of mathematics or mathematical activities in specific regions, but to a broader audience of anyone interested in history.
