The Institute of Mathematics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was founded in 1934. The present article provides an overview of its scientific achievements in mathematical problems of mechanics and control theory since the foundation until the present. The paper is mostly of biographical nature, and discusses the major discoveries of more than 30 scientists who were active in the institute.
