Assigning the associated group to a quandle gives a functor from the category of quandles to that of groups, and this functor is adjoint to the functor from the category of groups to that of quandles which assigns the conjugation quandle to a group. Consequently, associated groups of quandles play a crucial role in understanding quandles themselves. In the paper under review, the authors give several explicit descriptions of the structure of the associated groups by considering some natural quotients of these groups. Among other results, the authors give a description of the commutator subgroup of the associated group, and the second homology of the quandle in terms of the corresponding quotient group.
