Let \(\phi\) be a mapping class on the genus-\(g\) surface \(S_{g,1}\) with a single boundary component and \(M_{\phi}\) be the closed oriented connected 3-manifold that is determined by the open book with pages \(S_{g,1}\) and with monodromy \(\phi\). Let \(\omega(\phi)\) denote the fractional Dehn twist coefficient of \(\phi\) along the boundary (as defined in [\textit{K. Honda} et al., Invent. Math. 169, No. 2, 427--449 (2007; Zbl 1167.57008)]). Is there a condition on \(\omega(\phi)\) which guarantees that the Euler characteristic of \(S_{g,1}\) is the highest possible among the pages of all open books that reside in \(M_{\phi}\)? A more restricted question may be asked by allowing only the open books that support the original contact structure. The authors construct a family of distinct examples of Stein fillable contact 3-manifolds to get a feeling about the condition on \(\omega(\phi)\). Namely for each integer \(k\ge 0\) they construct such a 3-manifold with two different open books with connected binding and supporting the contact structure: one with page genus \(k+1\) and \(\omega(\phi)=k\) and another with page genus \(k\). Their examples are constructed as branched double coverings of braided links in \(S^3\). This family allows the authors to ask whether the condition on \(\omega(\phi)\) in the questions above could be \(|\omega(\phi)|>g-1/2\). The authors point out that there is an analogous question that they have already asked on braided links: Let \(\beta\) be a braid with \(n\) strands. If \(|\omega(\beta)|>n-2\), is it true that every braid with the same closure as \(\beta\) has at least \(n\) strands? In [\textit{P. Feller} and \textit{D. Hubbard}, J. Topol. 12, No. 4, 1069--1092 (2019; Zbl 1450.57001)] with the assumption \(|\omega(\beta)|>n-1\) this question was answered in the affirmative.
