The present paper is devoted to establishing a direct connection between two well-known diagrammatic tools to represent closed orientable PL 4-manifolds, i.e. Kirby diagrams (see, for example, the book [\textit{R. E. Gompf} and \textit{A. I. Stipsicz}, 4-manifolds and Kirby calculus. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (1999; Zbl 0933.57020)]) and trisection diagrams (introduced by \textit{D. T. Gay} and \textit{R. Kirby} [Geom. Topol. 20, No. 6, 3097--3132 (2016; Zbl 1372.57033)]). More precisely, the author presents an algorithmic procedure yielding a trisection diagram of a closed orientable PL 4-manifold, starting from a Kirby diagram of the same manifold. The algorithm may be useful to obtain examples of trisection diagrams for 4-manifolds with known Kirby diagrams. The author takes into account also non-orientable 4-manifolds, whose trisections and trisection diagrams have been recently introduced in a preprint by \textit{M. Miller} and \textit{P. Naylor} [``Trisections of non-orientable 4-manifolds'', Preprint, \url{arXiv:2010.07433}]. A modified version of the above algorithm is provided in the non-orientable case, too.
