This paper, primarily concerned with mathematical modelling, introduces a spatially heterogeneous producer-grazer model that tracks phosphorus content in both the producer and the environment, enlarging a 2-dimensional model previously proposed by \textit{I. Loladze} et al. [Bull. Math. Biol. 62, No. 6, 1137--1162 (2000; Zbl 1323.92098)] in which the phosphorus is tracked implicitly via the phosphorus to carbon ratio. Of concern is a 4-dimensional PDE model which is mechanistically derived, accounts for spatial dynamics and is analyzed chiefly from a numerical viewpoint. The spatial and chemical heterogeneity are seen to lead to a rich dynamics with multiple equilibria, in which both bistability and the extinction of the grazer are possible. A comparative analysis between corresponding results for related models is performed, highlighting the importance of tracking environmental nutrients loads in stoichiometric models, as the resulting dynamics is sensible to resource limitations.
