A subgroup \(H\) of a group \(G\) is said to be permutable in \(G\) if \(HK = KH\) for all subgroups \(K\) of \(G\). A Schmidt group is a non-nilpotent group whose proper subgroups are nilpotent and a subgroup \(H\) of a group \(G\) is \textsf{Sch}-permutable if \(H\) permutes with every Schmidt subgroup of \(G\). Question 17.56 posed by V. N. Knyagina and V. S. Monakhov in the Kourovka Notebook [\textit{V. D. Mazurov} (ed.) and \textit{E. I. Khukhro} (ed.), The Kourovka notebook. Unsolved problems in group theory. 18th edition. Novosibirsk: Institute of Mathematics, Russian Academy of Sciences, Siberian Div. (2014; Zbl 1372.20001)] asks if \(H/\mathrm{Core}_{G}(H)\) is nilpotent whenever \(H\) is a \textsf{Sch}-permutable subgroup of a finite group \(G\). In Example 1 of the paper under review it is shown that the answer is negative in general. Let \(S_{\langle p,q \rangle}\) be the class of all Schmidt groups with a normal Sylow \(p\)-subgroup and a non-normal cyclic Sylow \(q\)-subgroup. The main result of this paper is Theorem A: Let \(G\) be a finite group with \(\Phi(G)=1\) and let \(H\) be a \(S_{\langle p,q \rangle}\)-subgroup of \(G\). Then \(H/\mathrm{Core}_{G}(H)\) is nilpotent if and only if \(H\) is \(p\)-normally embedded in \(G\).
